We are delighted to announce the winner of our ninth art competition – an annual initiative by CanFASD to showcase and celebrate the creativity of Canadians with FASD.

We received an incredible selection of submissions from across the country and it was very difficult to choose the winner.

The 2024 winner is Wilfred Joey Klein, an artist based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Wilfred will receive a prize, and this beautiful painting will be this year’s holiday card.

First place: Wilfred Joey Klein

Northern lights shimmering in the night sky above snow-covered trees.

Wilfred Joey Klein’s painting captures the beauty of the Aurora Borealis in a unique and mesmerizing way. With a focus on color and light, Wilfred’s art is sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who sees it.

Since 2004, Wilfred has developed his skills as a self-taught artist into creating beautiful artwork. He finds contentment in creating unique pieces and sharing them with others. Each piece he creates is a reflection of his journey and helps to council himself when life gets him down. Wilfred takes great pride in completing a piece of artwork and is often amazed as to what his mind is able to transfer onto a canvas. He always remains humble and lets his artwork speak for itself.

“I enjoy art and sketching because it is calming and helps me express my emotions…I also enjoy other expressions of art such as singing, music, writing, and dancing.” – Kenna W

Blue seal in front of a yellow background

“I am 11 years old and have had an obsession with art. In this painting I did an acrylic yellow background with a watercolor seal. Being different by using watercolor acrylic paint together on one canvas and sealing it with a clear coat for perfect light reflection. I drew this painting by hand. I really love animals and love to draw them.” – Adriana

Carol singers in front of a bright star

“I am ten years old, and I have been living in Canada for two years since the war in Ukraine started. In Toronto, I go to art classes with a teacher from Ukraine because it helps me calm down and I like my teacher’s gentle voice. Over the past few months, I have painted many paintings, and the last one is about how we went caroling in Ukraine with my mom and sister before Christmas. I really love Christmas and can’t wait to go caroling here in Canada soon. I hope this Christmas star will bring peace and tranquility to all of us!” – Stefania
