At CanFASD, we believe that research is strongest when it is shaped by the voices of people with lived and living experience. Through this collaboration, art becomes a way to create opportunity, helping ensure that individuals with lived experience of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) can participate in the conversations, research, and decisions that affect their lives.
The Reflection of Acceptance is now available as a signed edition of just 225 prints, with 100% of the proceeds supporting CanFASD’s Lived Experience Leadership Fund.
Meet the artist
A self-taught artist based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Wilfred Joey Klein is known for his striking paintings of the Aurora Borealis. His work captures the movement of light across northern skies, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and connect with something larger than themselves. You may recognise Wilfred’s artwork from when he won our 2024 Art Competition! We then went onto feature his art on the front cover of our 2024 – 2025 Impact Report.
Born in Inuvik and raised between Edmonton and communities across the Northwest Territories, Wilfred has spent more than two decades developing his artistic practice.
Inspired by the FASD community
The idea for this partnership began after Wilfred attended the Canada FASD Conference in 2025. There, he witnessed researchers, service providers, families, and people with lived experience coming together to share knowledge and shape the future of FASD research and practice. What stood out most was the invaluable contribution of people with lived experience.
At the same time, Wilfred saw a significant challenge. Many individuals with lived experience face financial barriers that make participating in conferences, research projects, and leadership opportunities difficult. Travel, accommodations, transportation, accessibility supports, and other participation costs can prevent people from being present in the very spaces where their voices are needed most. That realization inspired him to use his art to help make participation possible.
Supporting lived experience leadership
Every purchase of The Reflection of Acceptance directly supports CanFASD’s Lived Experience Leadership Fund. The fund helps remove financial barriers so that people with lived experience of FASD can contribute to research, participate in conferences and advisory groups, and help shape policies and practices that impact their communities.
Since its launch in 2024, the fund has already supported six people to travel across Canada and internationally.
