With September fast approaching, the CanFASD team is getting ready for a busy month of advocating. We would love you to be involved!
This year’s theme for FASD Awareness Month, “Everyone Plays a Part: It Takes a Community,” highlights how collective support helps individuals with FASD and their families thrive.
Get involved in our campaign this year by sharing your perspective on the theme through:
- a short video, or
- an anonymous written response
Both options are equally valued and will directly support and shape this year’s campaign. We especially encourage participation from people with lived or living experience, including individuals with FASD, family members and caregivers, those involved in prevention or support programs, and birth mothers, as these perspectives are essential in reflecting the diversity of community experiences.
1. Submitting a video
We invite you to submit a short video answering the question: “What does community mean to you?”. You could share a story about how your community has supported you in the past or what would be helpful to you in the future. You could talk about who makes up your community – your teachers, neighbours, friends, and family and how they help support you.
To ensure good quality and consistency:
- Start by introducing yourself
- Record using a smartphone in vertical (portrait) orientation
- Choose a well-lit space (natural light is best if possible)
- Make sure audio is clear and easy to understand
- Keep the video between 30 seconds and 2 minutes, but if you want to make it short and sweet, that is okay too!
Before recording, participants are encouraged to review the CanFASD Common Messages Guide. This helps ensure that language used in the video is respectful, accurate, and aligned with current best practices when discussing FASD.
Once your video is complete, please email it to fiona.binns@canfasd.ca. The submission deadline August 14, 2026. Selected videos will be featured as part of a broader awareness campaign and may be shared on CanFASD’s website and social media platforms to highlight diverse voices and experiences of community.
2. Written responses
If you prefer not to appear on camera, you are still invited to participate by submitting a short, written response. This option simply asks you to reflect on the question “What does community support mean to you?” and share your thoughts through a brief online form. There is no required length – your response can be as short or as detailed as you would like, as long as it feels meaningful to you.
You will remain anonymous and do not need to include your name or any identifying information. Selected quotes may be used throughout the campaign to help highlight the many ways community support is experienced in people’s lives.
It Takes a Community!
Whether you contribute a video or a sentence, you’re helping build a more inclusive and informed community – thank you in advance for your collaboration. We can’t wait to see the amazing ways that our community supports one another!
Please note: we cannot guarantee that every submission we receive will be shared by CanFASD. By submitting your video or written response you have consented to having your submission shared as part of marketing and communication materials for this and future campaigns. If you wish to withdraw your consent, please email fiona.binns@canfasd.ca.
