CanFASD appoints Director of Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives, and new Executive Director

The Canada FASD Research Network is entering an exciting new chapter with two key leadership appointments. Audrey McFarlane will be taking on the position of Director of Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives, and Kathy Unsworth of Executive Director. These changes mark a strategic step forward as we continue our mission to improve outcomes for individuals with FASD.  

A familiar face in a new role  

Audrey McFarlane has been an integral part of CanFASD’s success for many years. She has led the organization’s growth as Executive Director since 2017, and scaling back her responsibilities to better balance her passion for the field of FASD and the commitments in her personal life. Now, in her new position, McFarlane will focus on strengthening key relationships within and beyond the FASD community. Her vast experience and network will remain invaluable as CanFASD continues its national leadership in advocacy, research, and policy development.  

Board Chair Olecia Walker says: “CanFASD has grown a lot in a short period of time and our roles and responsibilities are evolving. We are excited about the new role of Director of Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives, as it will be critical to help us build and strengthen key partnerships that our Network is built on, both within and outside the FASD community. Audrey is the perfect person to take on this role. Her longstanding leadership, vision, and connections will be key as we pursue our ambitious goals, including advancing policy reform, supporting regulatory bodies, and improving national coordination on FASD issues.” 

Welcoming a new Executive Director  

Kathy Unsworth, formerly the Managing Director of CanFASD, is stepping into the role of Executive Director. Throughout her time at CanFASD, Kathy has played a significant role in driving national initiatives. This includes advocacy for Bill S-253 and the proposed National FASD Framework. Her expertise in public health, community development, and policy-making will be instrumental in CanFASD’s continued growth and impact.   

Building on a strong foundation  

Since its founding in 2005, CanFASD has become Canada’s national voice for FASD research, advocacy, and support. Our organization has led groundbreaking initiatives. We launched the FASD National Database. We developed the National FASD Framework. We have created hundreds of essential tools for families, professionals, and communities.  

As CanFASD continues to expand its reach, McFarlane and Unsworth’s leadership will be crucial in achieving our strategic priorities. These include influencing policy, fostering cross-sector collaboration, and advancing prevention and support initiatives.
