Meet RJ Formanek
RJ did not receive an FASD diagnosis until his late forties. He was surprised to realize many of his life strategies were shaped by his disability. He then pursued education in FASD at the Anishinabek Educational Institute in North Bay, Ontario. During his studies, he discovered that his experiences gave him a unique insight into FASD.
RJ founded the Facebook support group Flying With Broken Wings and co-founded the FASD advocacy group Red Shoes Rocks. RJ is also a passionate speaker, advocating for people on the spectrum. His advocacy work highlights the realities of FASD and many experiences of people all around the world who deal with it every day.
The Story Behind the Red Shoes
RJ has shared the personal story behind his iconic red shoes, a symbol for FASD advocacy. The red shoes represent standing out and embracing individuality, a theme that has followed him throughout his life. Through these shoes, RJ aims to change the perception of people with FASD. He wants to show that they are full of potential. His journey with the shoes has become a global movement. It symbolizes hope, resilience, and the power of being true to oneself. The Red Shoes initiative has grown, offering love and support for those with FASD. RJ proudly states, “Red Shoes is about love.”
