Four helpful infographics for learning more about FASD

Infographics are a great way to make complex research more accessible. Whether you’re looking to better understand Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), support a student in the classroom or find resources for caregivers, visual summaries can help turn research into practical information.

We’ve recently added four new FASD infographics to the CanFASD website, exploring different aspects of FASD research and support – check them out below!

Social Media Portrayals of Alcohol and Cannabis Use in Motherhood

This infographic was created by Maria Duquette. It explores how alcohol and cannabis use is portrayed in online motherhood communities. Understanding how alcohol and cannabis use are portrayed in these spaces can help researchers explore wider social attitudes towards motherhood and substance use. These insights may also help inform future research, public health messaging and more supportive approaches to care.

Understanding FASD in the Classroom

This infographic, created by Kanzah Rabbani, explores how FASD can affect learning and classroom experiences. It looks at areas such as executive functioning, memory and processing speed, as well as how behaviours may communicate that a student is feeling overwhelmed, experiencing sensory overload or struggling to understand information. This knowledge can help educators recognize individual strengths and support needs, adapt classroom strategies and provide appropriate accommodations to help students with FASD reach their potential.

Thinking About FASD? A Guide to FASD Assessments for Caregivers

This infographic was created by Gursimran Mann. It explores the FASD assessment process and what caregivers may wish to consider when deciding whether an assessment is right for their child. Understanding the assessment process can help caregivers feel more informed when considering their next steps. By outlining how referrals, assessments and recommendations may work, this resource offers an introduction to what families can expect.

Reaching Our Potential: Strategies and Resources for Caregivers of Individuals with FASD

Also created by Gursimran Mann, this infographic explores strategies and resources that can support caregivers of individuals with FASD. The infographic highlights the importance of self-care, professional support and peer connections, with examples ranging from physical activities and personal hobbies to accessing FASD services and connecting with other caregivers.

The next generation of researchers

These four infographics were created by trainees in the CanFASD Trainee Program. This program was established in 2021 to bring together students, early-career researchers and professionals working in the field of FASD. The program aims to encourage connection, community building and collaboration among emerging FASD researchers and professionals across Canada.

Trainees work on projects connected to CanFASD’s research priorities, covering a diverse range of topics and geographic regions. Their work reflects the multidisciplinary nature of FASD research and helps bring new perspectives and ideas into the field.

By sharing these infographics, we hope to make research more accessible and highlight the contributions of emerging talent working to improve understanding of FASD and supporting healthy pregnancies.
