Saskatoon: the heart of the Canada FASD Conference

History of Saskatoon

Saskatoon is located on Treaty Six Territory and the Homeland of the Métis in what is known as the province of Saskatchewan, the neighbour of Manitoba and Alberta.

It is named Saskatoon after the Saskatoon berry and is famous for the potash and uranium industries. It is also the hometown of several big names, including folk singer Joni Mitchell, Booker prize winning author Yann Martel and comic book artist Tom Grummett.

Saskatoon is nicknamed the “City of Bridges” due the eight bridges crossing the South Saskatchewan River. It has also been called the “Paris of the Prairies” for its foodie scene and arts culture.

FASD in Saskatoon

There are a number of prominent FASD-related organizations in Saskatchewan including the FASD Network of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute. These organizations are part of a large community of people in the province and across Canada that are invested in creating change for FASD.

Wrap up to stay warm

Like much of Canada, you can expect cool weather in Saskatoon in November. The average temperature is between -1°C and -7°C and there is a good chance of snow. Make sure to bring warm clothes and suitable footwear. You can stay cozy during the conference inside of TUC Place, where the event will be hosted.

Getting around the city

When booking your travel to the conference, it’s useful to bear in mind that Saskatoon has an airport and train station. John G. Diefenbaker International Airport is a 15-minute drive from TCU Place or around 30 minutes on the airport bus.

If you’re arriving by train, the train station is also located a 15-minute drive away or you can jump on a 30-minute bus to the city centre then to a short walk to the conference space. The city has a public transport system to help you get around.
