CanFASD is pleased to announce our newest free course, which provides a basic training program intended for everyone that will come into contact with individuals with FASD. This evidence-based course is both culturally sensitive and responsive to learners needs.
Topics in this course include an overview of FASD assessment and diagnosis, FASD interventions, how alcohol affects the brain development of a fetus, prevention and support strategies, as well as potential barriers, stigma surrounding FASD, and signs and symptoms of FASD.
Learners will receive a certificate to acknowledge their course completion at the end of the course.

In addition to our Foundations in FASD course, we also offer three other online-based courses described below:
Multidisciplinary Team Training for Diagnosis of FASD
- Geared toward professionals who may be part of a diagnostic team
- Designed for those who are currently working in FASD clinics or may soon become part of a diagnostic team
- Include common areas that apply to all disciplines contributing to the multidisciplinary team
- By the end of the course, professionals are expected to have a better understanding of FASD, improve their specialty area in relation to diagnosing and treating FASD, as well as read research articles related to the field
- Teams are encouraged to complete the course together
The Prevention Conversation
- Designed for front-line health and social service professionals
- Participants are provided with tools to create a supportive environment for their clients to talk about alcohol and pregnancy and its potential effects on the child
- Participants will come to better understand alcohol use during pregnancy, and how to help their clients of child-bearing age
- Participants will learn to screen pregnant women who may be consuming alcohol, and women of child-bearing age who may become pregnant/consume alcohol
- Increase knowledge/awareness of local resources to provide to clients
Towards Improved Practice (TIP)
- Targets front-line service providers in areas of mental health, addictions, corrections, shelters, literacy and adult education programs
- Intends to teach participants how to screen for individuals at risk of having a child with FASD, or those at risk of having FASD themselves
- Learn how to prevent FASD and improve outcomes for those with FASD
- This course includes the impact of FASD on individuals and their family members
- Participants will also learn how to prevent FASD, support women at risk of having a child with FASD, referring individuals for a potential diagnosis of FASD, and proving interventions
